Auto Insurance Claims: Accident Liability, own insurance, emergency brake

Question
I recently visit a car dealership and test drove a few cars. The last car I drove was parked by me and the emergency brake was set and I went inside the dealership to discuss financing. While inside supposedly the vehicle rolled into another dealership vehicle causing minor damage to the vehicle I had parked. The dealership did not have me sign any form prior to driving the vehicle and I only had given them a copy of my drivers license. I was told by the dealership that I was going to be held liable for the damage to the vehicle and that I needed to give them my insurance information. I involved the local police and they told me to go ahead and give them my insurance information and then work it out from that angle. Am I liable for damages or should the dealerships own insurance cover such accidents.

Answer
Hi Jason,

Unfortunately, you are responsible for the damage. Anytime your actions result in damage to someone elses property you are responsible to pay for that damage. You do not need to sign something to be held responsible. As soon as you have control of the vehicle it is your responsibility.

I hope this helps
