Auto Insurance Claims: Diminished value, diminished value, own insurance

Question
I live in Ohio and had a run in with a deer in my BMW.  Extensive damage.  Does Ohio require payment for DM and if so how is it calculated?  Knowing how expensive BMWs can be to repair I'm kind of hoping that the car is totaled.

Answer
Hi Warren,

By "DM" I assume you mean DV (Diminished Value).

In the state of Ohio, you can not claim diminished value from your own insurance policy. Only when someone else is at-fault for an accident can you claim diminished value from the at-fault party or their insurance company.

I hope this helps
