Auto Insurance Claims: Do I have to get my car fixed?, lienholder, uim coverage

Question
Someone backed into my car and left the scene. My insurance is paying the claim under my UIM coverage-which has a $250 deductible. I don't have the time for my vehicle to be in the shop, nor do I have the $250 for the deductible. Does my car have to get fixed right now or at all?

Answer
Hi Sara,

There is no requirement to have your vehicle repaired. However, if you have a loan on your car the insurance company will make the check payable to you and your lienholder and you will not be able to cash the check unless you can prove to the lienholder that the vehicle has been repaired. The is to protect the interest of the lienholder.

I hope this helps
