Auto Insurance Claims: Fully Covered, property damage coverage, automatic suspension

Question
I had auto insurance from the car dealership in order to drive off the lot with the car and got into a car accident a few weeks later before my 30 day insurance expired. However i do see that I just have collision/comprehensive coverage not bodily injury/property damage coverage. Am i in a bad situation and how do I resolve this without getting my license suspended or revoked?

Answer
Hi Crystal,

The comprehensive & collision coverage from the dealer only covers damage to your car. You are required by state law to purchase liabiility insurance to cover injuries and property damage that you cause to other people or property. Since you did not have that coverage you will be required to personally pay for any injuries and or property damage that resulted from the accident. In addition, the state may require you to provide an SR22 which is a document that tells the state that you have the required insurance. That document also requires that the state be notified by your insurance company if you ever let the insurance lapse which will trigger the automatic suspension of your drivers license.

I hope this helps
