Auto Insurance Claims: minor involved auto accident, fault insurance, own insurance

Question
My 15 year old son ran a stop sign on his bicycle and hit a car damaging it slightly as well as his bicycle. Now the owner is billing me $1300 for repairs. Am I liable for this accident? Also, we live in a no-fault insurance state (NJ) does that have any effect on my son or I being liable for the damages?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Unfortunately, as a parent you are responsible for the actions of your child. No fault has nothing to do with this situation. No fault applies to injuries sustained in an auto accident and simply means that regardless of fault the first certain amount of medical bills is paid by your own insurance policy.

You will be responsible for paying the cost of repairs to the vehicle that were caused by your son.

I hope this helps
