Auto Insurance Claims: At-fault insurance claim, fault insurance, collision insurance

Question
I live in Michigan - I hit a car while changing lanes, and was found at fault for the accident. My car has full coverage on it, but the car that I hit only has PLPD. The damage to both cars was not extensive, probably less than $2000 for each car. My question is, will the other driver's insurance company file a claim against my insurance company, even though he does not have collision insurance on his car? I may end up paying for my own repairs outright to avoid making a claim against the insurance, but I don't know if he can or not. And if can, whether my insurance company would raise my rates or drop me or anything like that.

Answer
Hi Brenda,

Michigan is a no fault state. This generally means that everyone goes to their own insurance company for the damage to their car regardless of who is at fault. Unfortunately, I am not that familiar with Michigan laws, so I am not sure what happens when someone does not have collsion coverage..

I hope this helps
