Chrysler Repair: Continuing Problems with 1986 New Yorker, head gasket, looking at air

Question
Roland, this is a followup to my original post  http://en.allexperts.com/q/Chrysler-Repair-807/2008/10/1986-New-Yorker-Heat.htm  "1986 New Yorker with No Heat Inside Car".
We are still having trouble with our 1986 New Yorker. It seems like the more we do the more problems appear.
List of problems;
1; First, our heater problem is for the most part still with us. I've been under the dash many times looking at air actuator doors using the diagrams that you sent. We did find one that appeared to be "stuck" and got it working. Had heat for a few blocks of driving but now it's not working again.
2; When starting the car in the morning (cold) we have to crank for maybe 30 seconds or more. Then when the car does start it runs extremely slow for a little while then the idle goes extremely fast. After a few minutes of this up and down speed it will level out to a good idle and run good until it gets cold again.
3; When driving, the temperature gauge will go extremely high. At one time clear into the red zone for a few seconds. After a little while it will come back down. Not sure if maybe it has a faulty temp gauge but I suspect not with problem # 4.
4; Water from radiator will boil over into the overflow bottle until it spills out onto the ground.
We do NOT have white smoke (or any other smoke) out of the exhaust.
List of things we've done;
1;Tried not one, but two new thermostats.
2;New spark plugs and plug wires.
3;New water valve.
4;Head was replaced in 1988. About 3 years ago the head gasket started leaking. Gasket was replaced and head was milled at that time.

The one thing I would like, if you would please, is a copy of a diagram of the water valve and hose routing to/from it. I suspect it may have been replaced before we got the car and maybe the hose routing is wrong. The valve I'm referring to is on the left side under the hood. It is black, has four hoses routed to it and has a small vacuum canister attached to it that appears to open and close water flow to the heater core. Beyond that I'm not sure what else it does.
I will be happy to send you more stamps for your expenses.
Thank You.

Answer
Hi Terry,
That is the heater by-pass valve which is supposed to be open only when the a/c is set to 'recirc' so as to give maximum cooling. It shuts off the circulation of heated coolant to the heater core in the cabin.  The vacuum line is what controls it. Check to see if the vacuum line which goes through the firewall to the heater control panel is vacuum tight would be the first thing to do (Check to detect vacuum suction when you try the ac in the two positions that follow: you should detect suction on one or the other, not sure which.  Then re-connect vacuum line and try to vary with the ac 'on' between normal cool ac anc recirc ac to see if the valve shows any sign of movement. If not, then remove valve and see if you can lubricate so as to be responsive. I can xerox a copy of the diagram and mail it to you, no charge.

Happy holidays!
