Auto Insurance Claims: need help finding out ins info, claims adjustor, new 2007 chevy silverado

Question
My truck was involved in a accident whike I was sleeping and I only woke to my neighbor banging on my door to let me know he had heard it and saw the driver and passanger get out of the car and run off. I called the police and they came out, but when I got a police report it had no insurance information on the vehicle it just had UNKNOWN on it. The guy who hit me his car is registered in PA and this happened in MD. So I tried calling the PA MVA and they told me they could not give out any information out to me. When I asked my claims adjuster who I talk to about it he told me my Insurance Rep. I called my rep adn left a message but he called me and told me he can't find out that information. But, I called a lawyer and the lawyer told me that he could find out the information if he wanted to. But also on the police report they have the passengers information because it says they caught up with her. But I was told if I called to try to find out anything that I could be charged with harrassment for calling her. So either way I feel like I am being screwed over by everyone. And this is the 1st claim I have ever made in the whole 5 years I have had insurance and my record is clean and I don;t understand why my ins rep won't help me find out when I have been told by claims adjustor and a lawyer that he could. So am I out of my deductible completely or what kind of legal action could I take against the passenger of the vehicle who hit my truck, so I can find out some kind of information? I think the main reason I am so upset about it and want to find out is because it is a brand new 2007 Chevy Silverado that I just bought 2 months ago and already the value of the truck went down because it was already in a accident. So what could I do to find out the information of the driver who was driving the vehicle?

Answer
Hi Kim,

Each state has different laws that determine who can obtain this information and what information can be obtained. You should contact the police again and if necessary ask to speak the police officers supervisor. You should ask them to get the information about who the owner of the vehicle is and their insurance information from the passenger that do have information on. If that does not work you may need to hire an attorney to track down the information. The claims adjuster at your insurance company may not be able to get the information him or herself.

I hope this helps
