Auto Insurance Claims: Hit and run by a rental van, own insurance, collision coverage

Hello, I was hit by a rental van yesterday, after the collision the driver took off wildly, and I followed him honking until I had his license plate #. Then I called the cops and filed a police report. The police have located the driver and now I don't know what to do now. I don't know if this guy has insurance or not. Should I make my claim with the company who rented the van to him?

You will need to obtain a copy of the police report. It should contain his insurance information. You can start by contacting the rental company to file a claim, however, you should be prepared for delays and the run-around. If you have collision coverage you should file this on your own insurance policy. Then your insurance company will deal with getting reimbursed once the dust settles.
