Auto Insurance Claims: Rental car liability, rental car company, payment arrangement

Question
I rented a car in Hawaii and got into a minor accident at a parking garage.
There was no damage to the rental vehicle but there was minor damage to
the other involved vehicle.  I do not have any car insurance and I did not
purchase any supplemental coverage from the rental company.  My
understanding is that the rental car company has state-mandated liability
coverage which would be the primary coverage since I do not have any.  My
question is can the rental car company sue me for any liability payments
made and if so on what grounds?  Also is it likely that they will in fact go
through the trouble of bringing such a suit considering that the dollar amount
of the damages is around $500-$600?

Answer
Hi Joel,

As the person who is responsible for the damage, you are ultimately responsible fo paying for the cost of repairs. The rental company's insurance company wil likely send you a notice requesting reimbursement of any money they pay out. If this happens you will likely be given an opportunity to make a payment arrangement. Considering the small amount of the damage, you should be able to make a payment arrangement that will satisfy everyone concerned.

I hope this helps
