Auto Insurance Claims: Insurance Claims when car wrecks into property, auto insurance policy, car wrecks

Question
My sister rents a house that is owned by my mother. A drunk driver wrecked into the garage several times, causing substantial damage to the garage, the car and items inside, and the surrounding fence. It is likely that the garage will need to be rebuilt. My sister witnessed the event and got the drivers license and the driver was cited.

The driver was driving his grandfather's car (grandfather deceased for 2 months) and had presumably taken the car from his grandmother without her knowledge. He is not covered on her auto insurance policy.

My family has pursued claims with my mother's homeowner's insurance and the driver's grandmother's auto insurance. My sister's car was not insured.

My family is concerned about additional expenses they are incurring. For example, the lawnmower in the garage is not retrievable, so they have had to pay for lawnmowing service.    Can these be included in the claim?

Also, any advice on whether my family needs to pursue this in other ways? Will the insurance companies just fight this out?

Answer
Hi Debbie,

It sounds like you are doing everything you can do. If you have questions about what is covered or not, thoise should be directed to your honeowners insurance company.

Once everything is settled, the insurance companies will negotiate who is at fault and for how much.

I hope this helps
