Auto Insurance Claims: claim protocol, car repairs, theives

Question
I received a check from the driver-at-fault's insurance company for car repairs and car rental costs, which I have not cashed/deposited. The estimated cost for repairs exceeds the amount of the payment. I notified the adjuster of the difference. He said to return the car to the shop and he'll discuss the repairs with them to determine if their estimate is justified. Why does my car have to be at the shop to make this determination? The adjuster took photos of the damages. I can fax him the estimate.

Answer
Hi Diane,

All insurance companies believe that body shops are theives and liars, therefore they want to be able to verify everything the body shop says is needed to do the repairs.  I'm not sure if the repairs are done or not, but if not just put the car in the shop of your choice for the repairs. Give the body shop the estimate from the insurance company and the body shop will call the insurance company for you to arrange any reinspections that are required.

I hope this helps
