Auto Insurance Claims: auto accident involving a stolen car, state attorney office, company thanks

Question
My car was hit last night by a car that had been stolen.  My question is, is the owner of the stolen vehicle or their insurance company responsible for the damage to my vehicle?  Should I put a claim in with their insurance company?  Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer
Hi Beth,

The owner of a stolen vehicle can not be held responsible for damage caused by a theif after stealing their car. Since the owner can not be held responsible, their insurance company will not provide any coverage.

You will need to make the claim against your own coverage. You may also want to call your state attorney office to see if there is any type of crime victim fund that you may be able to get som help from.

I hope this helps
