Auto Insurance Claims: retroactive car insurance payment, same time period, insurance payment

Question
If I have to retroactively pay for a month of car insurance that lapsed to reinstate my policy, does that mean that coverage has to be retroactive for that same time period?  My coverage was cancelled the end of Sept because I had mysteriously been placed on the monthly payment plan after years of biannual payment.  Naturally, I hit a large piece of a semi-truck in the road 2 weeks later before knowing my insurance had even been cancelled.  It was quite the surprise when I called to file my claim.  Now, I am back paying the month I owe to reinstate my policy and had someone tell me that paying for those back  months entitles me to coverage for those months (as oppposed to restarting a new policy).

Answer
Hi J.

Yes. If you back pay the premium, then the coverage is retroactive as well.  However as part of that process the insurance company will usually have you sign a form indicating that you did not have a claims nor will you make any claims for the time when the coverage was lapsed. So you might want to check to see if this was the case.

I hope this helps
