Auto Insurance Claims: repair shop says it will be totalled, preferred shop, toyota sienna

Question
I wrecked my 2003 Toyota sienna, and it was towed to a local shop, the adjuster went to look at it, and decided to have it towed to their preferred shop.  I just received a call from that shop saying it will definitely be deemed totaled.  I have read that they will try to low ball me, so my questions are; when I receive a call from the insurance company what are my best resources for knowing the value of my van?  and what is the best way to negotiate with them?  when looking at NADA and KBB, do they owe me "trade-in" value or "market" value?

Thank you very much for your response.

Answer
HI Travis,

It is best if you take the time to research the value of your vehicle before the insurance company makes you an offer.  You should check the following:

1) www.nada.com
2) www.kbb.com
3) www.edmunds.com
4) www.autotrader.com

You should be checking the retail value of your vehicle. The last one I mention (www.autotrader.com) will allow you to search for actual vehicles like yours that are for currently for sale. Also remember that in most states you are also entitled to be paid sales tax ontop of the value of the car.

I hope this helps.
