Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Ac blowing hot, ambient air temperature, ac system

Question
I don't really know a lot about cars...here's what I do know...
A few days ago, my ac in my '91 escort was blowing cool, but not cold...then started blowing hot. My mom had a friend look at it...he says that the compressor is kicking on and seems to be working fine and we just need to charge it. For some reason, he couldn't get the refridgerant to actually go into where it's supposed to go. When he hooked the can to the low side place, I noticed that the PSI guage on the can was in the red...which means it's high right? Do we have to decompress it somehow before we can add the refridgerant?

Answer
Hello,

I will try to explain what is happening in simple terms.

Depending on the ambient air temperature the pressure in the can is around 80psi lets say.  The pressure in your AC system is 80psi as well.  Both vessels should have the same pressure in them at the same temperature. When you turn on the car and the compressor comes on and the AC system activates there will be a division of pressure.  A low side (approx 30psi) and a High Side (aprox 200-275psi for that car.  All the do it yourself kits I have seen only have fittings that go on the low side.
One thing I forgot to ask, which is very very important....

What type of refrigerant was added to your car?  Your 1991 Escort should be R12.  You can't buy a CFC anymore or kits to top them up.  Is he adding an HFC on top of a CFC?
