Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 2002 Ford Taurus AC, ford taurus, ac unit

Question
Okay I have a question for you please. I have a 2002 Ford Taurus. I bought the car used during the winter months and it never occured to me to the check the AC. Well its summer time and the tempature is rising and it doesnt work. I added Freon to the AC unit and nothing happened. I noticed that when the ac is engaged the clutch doesnt kick in like it should. Well me and my brother worked on the car for a bit and finally got it going to where it would kick in and off. We added more freon to the unit. It worked fine all day. The next day when I tried to turn on the unit it wouldnt work. I tried to jump the clutch to kick it in but it stopped. And I finally got to working again but I noticed the air in the car wasnt cool but luke warm. My question is that if there is a leak a hose somewhere would that stop the clutch from kicking in? Is so what would be a reaonable of finding the leak?

Answer
Hi Kevin

Unfortunately it seems like you make have a leak.  The system has a cycling switch that will disconnect the compressor if the refringent is not at the correct level.  It is a fail safe to save the compressor.  The only way to check for a leak is to have the proper equipment to test it.  Sorry I think you need to take it in to a specialist.
