Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Light Bulb Issue, hood latch, maintenance sector

Question
Hi, I just bought a 1986 Cadillac Deville Sedan. Under the engine hood is a assesory light. At first, the bulb didn't work now it does because I replaced it! Problem is......The light only will come on when the engine is turned on and the headlights are on. Doesn't seem odd?
I thought that this light would work like the lights that come on when you open the car door. Were the engine dosen't have to be on. Just the fact that you opened the hood!
Please explain to me if you think this is wrong or not. I thought that just simply opening up the engine hood, that the light would just come on without the engine being on, et.
Hope you understand my issue here. Thanks!!
Tom

Answer
Tom,
this is outside of me realm, I am the a/c and heater guy, you may want to as someone under the automotive maintenance sector. But I will give you what I believe.
I believe the previous owner re-wired the light at some point in time. It should come on when the hood is opened. It sounds as though when he re-wired it he connected to a wire that is controlled by your ignition switch. This should be an easy fix. If you look around the engine compartment where the hood would rest, you should find a switch much like the one in your refrigerator door. It may be located near where the hood latch is. If you re-run the wire to this switch, it should solve your problem.
On the off-chance that he also removed this switch you can always pick one up at autozone or advance, somewhere like that. They are a fairly generic switch and any should work. Run one hot from battery to the switch. run a wire from the switch to the light. then from the light run a wire to ground. Fairly simple circuit.
Thank you for your question. I hope I was of some asistance. If so please remember to rate this answer. If I can do anything further now or in the future, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks again and good luck in everything.
