Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Refrigerant for Escort, spark plug gap, r134a

Question
Hi,
I have a 1996 Ford Escort that needs the ac recharged.  Can you tell me what kind of refrigerant I need?  Thanks....Jane

Answer
Jane,
99% of passenger vehicles manufactured after late 1991 and all passenger vehicles manufactured after 1992 (excluding RVs) come from the factory with R134a in the system. Therefore, I am certain to say that your system rewuires R134a, unless for some reason a previous owner specially modified it. (Not likely at all) To verify, under the hood of your escort there will be a label. Either on the hood itself, on the radiator shroud/bracket, or on the back of the engine compartment telling you exactly how much refrigerant your system requires and what type. This is usually on the same label that tells you your spark plug gap and whatnot. But again, I am 99.9% sure that you will need R134a.
Thank you for your question and I hope I was of some assistance. If I can do anything further now or in the future, do not hesitate to ask. If you found this response useful please remember to rate this answer. Thanks again and good luck in everything.
