Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1990 toyota 4runner, toyota 4runner, diameter line

Question
QUESTION: Where is the low side connection on a 1990 Toyota 4runner?

Thanks.

ANSWER: Gene,
I have never worked on a 90 4runner, nor does my literature tell me anything about where your low side connection is located. I will however tell you how to locate it.

If you look at the lines connected to your compressor. There is one larger than the other. The larger in diameter line is your low side. This is NOT the one that leads to your condensor in front of the radiator. If you trace this from the compressor to the firewall, somewhere in this line you will locate the low side port. It will be either in a hard portion of the line, or on your accumulator (a canister roughly the girth of a soda can with two hard lines protruding from the top of it.

Generally speaking the low side port is located near the passenger side strut tower.

I hope this was of some assistance, even though I couldn't give you the exact location. If you found this at all helpful, please remember to rate this answer. Thank you for the question and if I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. Good luck in everything.

QUESTION: David,

Thank you for your response.  Have one more question:  Is it possible for it to be on the compressor?  There is one there and it is the right size.  I've traced the hose and found no other.

Thanks.

Gene

Answer
Gene,
Yes it is possible, not popular but possible, for it to be on the compressor manifold. If you are dealing with R134a, then the service ports are different sizes, and your low gauge will only fit on the low, your high gauge will only fit on the high. If you are dealing with the R12 system, then the fittings wil be the same size screw-on ports for high and low. The easiest way to make certain is to trace the line you are looking at. If it runs to the condensor in front of the radiator, it is your high side. If it runs to your firewall or evaporator housing it is your low side.
