Suzuki: 1993 Suzuki Sidekick fuel gauge, suzuki sidekick, fuel gauge

Question
I just got the sidekick and the fuel gauge doesn't work.  What should I do?  Is it a major issue or is it something easy that I can fix myself?

Answer
It's one of three things, a bad fuse (if the rest of the gauges work, that's probably not it), a bad gauge in the instrument cluster, a loose or broken wire, or a bad sender in the fuel tank.
as far as "easy" that depends on your mechanical abilities, and whether you understand electricity.  Changing a bad gauge (instrument) in the cluster isn't particularly difficult, but requires some care, and patience.  Removing the sender in the tank is much less fun, because as I remember it requires removal of the fuel tank first (make sure it's not full).
FIRST you NEED a decent service manual.
After checking fuses, depending on whether access to the sender at the tank is easy or not, after consulting the wiring diagram in the service manual grounding the wire to the gauge (at the sender) should cause the gauge to read full.  This is a relatively easy way of seeing if the gause is operative.
