I was told that the noise from my compressor is just break in noise and that it should go away after 500 miles of use.  I have had the compressor about 5 months, and I know I am well over 500 miles.  It whines when the van shifts or takes off.

Your compressor should not be whining at all, I would take it back to the shop that installed it and have it checked out before it becomes a problem again. The compressor should have some sort of warranty from the parts source the shop got it from.
