Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 2004 Cheve Malibu A/C, thermal expansion valve, warranty repair

Question
My a/c has recently been blowing hot air. It does it every once in a while and then goes back to normal. Today it started blowing hot air again and it hasn't stopped. What can I do to fix the problem without spending hundreds of dollars?

Answer
Hey Rebecca,

This sounds like my friends car an 07 Malibu, he was having the same trouble with his a/c. He ended up taking it in for a warranty repair and they found the thermal expansion valve to be malfunctioning/bad, and that’s what it sounds like is going on with your a/c. I called up my shop and got the labor time for the job and its 2.2 hours at $79.50 an hour (my shops labor rate), and whatever the cost of the valve itself is. In total you are probably looking at about $350 to $400. Sorry for the grim news, but let me know if you want to tackle this yourself and I will be happy to assist with any information or tips that I can.
