Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1993 Cadillac Devillie Air Conditioner, mechanic shop, reputable shop

Question
My air conditioner was working perfect.
While I was out of town, my wife brought the car to a mechanic shop because the radiator was loosing water over time and we could not find the water leak.
The mechanic replaced the radiator. It was cold weather at that time so she didn't check the air conditioner when she left the shop. Within a week the weather changed to hot. Then she discovered that the heater runs all of the time now. The mechanic told her that it must be an expensive part under the dashboard that needs to be replaced. What is wrong with this picture?

Answer
Hey Joe,

First, this could be coincidental. Although it's not necessary in the service manual, the condenser (part of the A/C system, which sits directly in front of the radiator) merely needs to be unmounted (bracket bolts removed) -- not removed. Some mechanics *may* remove it to give them room, and that could be an issue -- perhaps they forgot to recharge the system? However, merely trying to get the radiator out, and moving the condenser fittings or lines around *could* have an impact.

I would calmly explain the situation to the shop that did the work -- let them have a try at customer service. Most times, the failure of two system around the same time is merely coincidental, particularly if the problem is 'under the dash'. If you are not satisfied, then I'd suggest a second opinion, from another reputable shop. It's possible they could confirm a relation between the two -- and earn the trust of a new customer! Good luck!
