Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: A/C, c button, circuit breaker

The a/c on my 90 4-runner started smoking from the area of the compressor,it blew the fuse behind the glove box. I replaced the fuse and it blew again as soon as I turned on the a/c button.A new a/c clutch was installed about a year ago.Do you have any ideas or suggestions.Thank you in advance.           dave

Unfortunately, just because a part was replaced, doesn't mean it can't fail *again*. However, I called a Toyota buddy of mine, and he said that the factory clutch doesn't come with a coil (aftermarket ones probably do), and it's possible the clutch was installed without the coil. If that's the case. I'd say it was the clutch coil. Actually, it might be either way.

I'd unplug the coil, and then turn the system on, to see if the fuse blows. Better yet, get a 10A circuit breaker, and temporarily install it in place of the fuse. If it doesn't open, then you know you've probably found it. If it still blows, then the problem is elsewhere. That's improbable, since the thing was smoking. Oh wait... was the clutch smoking, or the belt? I'd assume the clutch coil was smoked, but if the compressor is seized, then you've got a bigger problem on your hands. If you grab it with both hands and give it a good twist (belt on, but easier with the belt off), you should be able to move it. Good luck!
