Steering Column Repair: keys with a chip, vehicle id number, buick riviera

Question
QUESTION: lost both ignition keys on a 97 buick riviera. is there something i can do other than getting a new cylinder and haveing it reprogramed, $500 or more?

ANSWER: Hi M

Yes, call the dealer with the vehicle ID number and they can cut you a new key with the correct chip in it for about $30.  If one dealer won't do it, try another.   Any GM dealer can help you a (and should).  They only keep the codes for 13 years, so hurry up!!  If you already know the VATS code number (1 through 15) you can have a locksmith do it.  But start with the dealer first

Good luck

QUESTION: I had the whole thing replaced a year ago when the old cylinder was having trouble recognizing my key. The dealer said he could cut a new key for this one but he would have to change the the whole thing again to program it to the car.
If what you said is true I will try to find a locksmith.

If the lock was changed, then the only thing the dealer can supply is the correct VATS code.  That's a start.  Having them re-cut a key from the VIN will only give you a key that fit the original lock.  With the VATS code though, you can find a locksmith who can recreate a new key to fit THIS lock, then combine the new key cut with the original VATS code and have a key made with both.  A good locksmith can do that for you.
