Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Compresser failure and system contamination, 2004 ford freestar, ford freestar

Question
I own a 2004 Ford Freestar.  Yesterday our compressor failed and I was informed by the dealership that when it failed it essentially contaminated the entire system and it must be rebuilt at a cost of $4,300.  Needless to say I was floored.  I would appreciate any commnets you might have as to pricing and if this is a common happening.

Thank you

Answer
Tak about trying to rip somebody off. That estimate is crazy. Get some estimates from some A/C service centers.

All that is usually required is a new compressor, orifice tube, accumulator, flush out the system, evacuate the system and recharge it with refrigerant oil and freon.
