Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 95 LeSabre A/C noisy smelly, compressor oil, freon

Question
Hi. Re 95 LeSabre, AC finally broke for good. It's noisy & smells like it's burning. I suspect the clutch. Questions: Is there a way to just fix the clutch? If not, is it ok to just remove the air compressor & put a new one on? I've read some other posts & understand that the compressor oil must be measured -- I will do that. But what about the freon? Is it ok to let it escape? Is it feasible to replace the compressor myself & then drive the car to a shop (15 miles) to have them purge the system & replace the freon?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
You have to positively identify if your problem is the clutch or the compressor starting to go bad. If it's the compressor this requires a multi-tude of special tools to replace the compressor, orifice tube, accumulator and flush the system, evac and recharge.

This is best to be left to the professionals.
