Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Air condition leak, vacuum pump, service man

Question
I have a 1998 Chev Suburban purchased about 2 months ago. I just had it serviced (oil change, etc) and since the air conditioner air has been getting warmer, I had that checked out and was told the unit was leaking in or around the clutch. I guess it could be a seal or bearing or something. The service man indicated it would cost $1000 to repair it. Is it possible to replace the seal or washer myself. If not, could I replace the unit and then get it recharged? It appears a new unit is about 200-250 dollars. I have done some minor engine repairs and think a replacement unit would be within my capability. Thank you for your help.

Answer
WHY they just don't replace the front seal is beyond me, Just plain LAZY and not enough PROFIT in it.

To replace it yourself is NOT a wise decision.

You have to have the special tools to remove and replace the seal(s). You then have to have a vacuum pump to extract all the air from the system BEFORE you can recharge it and you have to know EXACTLY how much refrigerant oil to add back into the system. If you put in to MUCH or to LITTLE oil, You will cause problems with the A/C system and can damage the new compressor.

You should also replace the expansion valve (orifice tube) and the accumulator (receiver/drier) due to the age of the vehicle.

Without all the tools and expertise you can cause further damage to the system.
