Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: rear ac unit in van, mineral spirits, chevy van

Question
I have a 1984 Chevy van full size. I have done a couple of r12 to r134 conversions and am about to attempt this one. The only thing that concerns me is the rear unit. I thought one solution might be to replace the front hoses with straight ones that do not "T" off to the rear unit. My conversions that I have done I have replaced the dryer, "O" rings on all conections, drained oil from compresser, flushed lines with mineral spirits, blew air through lines, replace hi,low valves, and new oriface tube, replace oil (ester) Then recharge. Would there be any extra components to replace on the rear unit besides more hoses to clean and more "O" rings to replace. Also if it stays in place do I need to put oil in the rear coils.

Answer
You use the same procedure for the rear system as for the front.

The ONLY thing your doing WRONG is flushing the system with mineral spirits and blowing compressed air into the system. Compressed air contains alot of moisture that is very damaging to the componnets and reduces the life of the receiver/drier.

Just use a flushing agent.

Personally I do not flush the systems unless I see alot of foreign debris on the expansion valve (orfice tube) of which I also replace on my conversions.

If you continue to use shop compressed air to flush the systems out YES you will have to add refrigerant oil to all the components.
