Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: Starting hesitation/possible fuel issue, fuel pressure gage, fuel delivery system

Question
2000 Dodge Dakota w/5.6L v-8.  Lately it starts hard.  If I hit starter for brief period, wait approximately 10 seconds, then reeengage starter,it starts right up.  I suspect a problem with fuel delivery system, specifically a check valve that is leaking allowing pressure to drop.  Bumping the starter then restores system and it starts.  What is my most likely issue, bad fuel pump or a non-return check valve in the fuel system.

Answer
You need to install a fuel pressure gage on the fuel line to make sure you are getting the 2 second initial fuel prime just before you start the engine.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump.
