Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 2000 Dakota A/C Failure, compressor failure, compressor clutch

Question
Recently the A/C on my 2000 Dodge Dakota stopped working.  I'm trying to assess the damage and what repairs are necessary.  Unit stopped blowing cool air.  If the air mode switch is in any setting (A/C, Heat, Window, etc.) the area around the clutch shaft entry becomes very hot, and things start to burn.  As long as the fan is not turned on and the air mode switch is off, it does not heat up.  Yes it grinds like heck.  More at low RPM's than high (probably due to engine noise blocking noise).  Am I looking at a complete compressor change.  Do I have a concern with particle carry over into the system?  Is flushing the system a DYI event?  Are tools, materials readily available?

Answer
Your problem could be simply a COMPRESSOR CLUTCH failure of which would only involve replacing the CLUTCH & HUB (BEARING) assembly. However this requires special tools to remove and install the assembly.

If it IS an internal compressor failure you will have to remove the compressor, flush the entire system with a flushing agent, replace the expansion valve (orfice tube), Add the correct amount of refrigerant oil, install a new compressor, evacuate the air from the system and recharge the system.

Also requires a set of A/C gages and the EXACT knowledge of knowing how much oil and freon to add to the system as well as the use of a vacuum pump to evacuate all the air out.

NOT a job for a novice of back yard mechanic. To MUCH or to LITTLE oil and or FREON and you will destroy the new compressor.

NOTE: Dodge is well known for having EVAPORATOR leaks and if this IS the case, Your looking at $800 to $2,000 to fix the system depending upon what they find out.
