Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: A/C servicing, freon, r 134

Question
My "A/C fluid level is low" Does all the R12 have to be removed to add to the existing level as the mechanic is recomending? I do not think I have a leak as the light has been on for severl months and I still get cold air. (Cadilac  El Dorado coup)

Answer
WHAT year vehicle ?. Older 90's Caddillacs used R-12. Newer uses R-134.

IF the light is ON that you are LOW on FREON in the A/C system. The PROPER repair is to find and fix the leak then evacuate the air from the system and recharge it.

I do NOT recommend just adding FREON as you have NO WAY to tell HOW MUCH to add. If you add to much you can destroy the compressor and or explode a hose.

You need to have a set of manifold (A/C) gages put on the system to see what the pressures are in order to determine how MUCH freon and possibly REFRIGERANT OIL that has been lost due to the leak.
