Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 1989 Chevy Tranny Problem, chevy k1500, blah blah

Question
Hello, this question is in reguards to my 1989 Chevy K1500 5.7L V8.  Was driving it one day when i pulled up to a stoplight to turn right.  Made a rolling stop then hit the gas and it reved up real high kicking into passing gear, quickly i let off the gas but appearently the damage had been done.  The engine runs just fine as well as everything else but when put into gear it wont go unless the engine is reved up very very high, even then it will only creep at a couple of mph.  Had it checked out by a shop and of course they came back with the usual (it will cost $2000 to fix blah blah blah) but i am a disbeliever.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,
Rock

Answer
Hi Rock,

I have been rebuilding transmissions for well over 25 years and unfortunately the trans shop is in all probability correct. As the type of transmission that you have in your vehicle has had many many problems since it was first designed.

the trans will have to be removed from the vehicle and completly overhauled as there are approx 15 updates in internal trans hardware that MUST be replaced and or revised.

$2,000.00 is about right for this major conversion and overhaul.

Personally, I would recommend that you purcase a rebuilt trans and make ABSOLUTELY SURE that whoever you purchased the transmission from has performed ALL of the updates.

I have heard of people buying transmissions from a place in Phoenix arizona that I think still sells them on Ebay ad they have a very good reputation.

We would be more than happy to rebuild it for you for $1300.00 but you would need to remove it from the vehicle and ship it to us here in New Mexico.

NOTE:::::  On occassion, There are some transmissions that are so badly damaged internally that they are not rebuildable and it is cheaper to purchase a rebuilt one out of stock.

let me know.
