Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 95 Chevy Truck Heater blows Cold, chilton repair manual, coolant level

Question
My 95 Chevy 1500  Silverado heater  blows cold. The fan works. The dial that changes vent ports work. The air conditioner is charged but seems not to get as cold as it should. I can hear changes from the blend door motor when I turn the temperature dial but I'm not sure what it should sound like. My Chilton repair manual says to make sure the blend door is closed when replacing the temperature control but I don't know how to access the blend door. I've been told that I should replace my heater control also. Where should I start ? Coolant level is good with anti-freeze. Fan Blows and ports are switching when the dial is turned. Thank you.

Answer
The FIRST issue we need to address is that you NEVER EVER mention a CHILTON book's recommendation EVER.

In my professional and personal opinion, This book is the most mis-guided mis-informative FITS-EM-ALL pile of paper that is ONLY use should be at as DOOR STOP and or a STEP STOOL.

I have seen many many disasters caused by miss-information contained in this book. I have and will NEVER own one and if someone brings one into my shop they either take it out or it goes in the TRASH.

If you are going to believe what this book tells you to do, I CAN'T help you.

OK, Now that we understand my position on this GENERIC door stop, We can get to your problem.

Please excuse my rampage above but I have a severe dis-taste for these type of books.

Let's start with the basics:

1. Are BOTH heater hoses HOT to the touch ?.

2. Is there ANY TYPE of a valve in ANY of the heater hoses ?.

3. What is the vehicles past repair history ?. EVERYTHING froma new transmission to replacing a light bulb.

4. Have you EVER had ANY over heating problms in the past ?.

5. Are you having ANY over heat problems NOW ?.

6. When was the thermostat replaced LAST ?.

7. Does the air FLOW out of the CORRECT vents when you select A/C, HEAT, DEFROST and or any OTHER settings ?.

8. Does the blower fan operate properly as in delivering the proper air flow at LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH for the interior vents ?.

9. Does the temperature gage start to go into the higher to HOT side when climbing a steep long grade ?.

10 What is the CURRENT mileage on the vehicle and is the radiator that is IN the vehicle the ORIGINAL radiator ?.

I know that's alot of questions, But I need the ANSWERS.

Answer EACH ONE SEPERATELY. Don't give me the SHORT version.

Once I have the answers I can help you with your diagnostics and e-mail you some drawings that you will need to compare to your vent door positions within the duct system.
