Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 91 tarus heater assembly, 2 nuts, master mechanic

Question
I have a 91 tarus with AC that i'm working on for my sister. Replacing the heater core. I seem to be having trouble removing the floor duct section from the heater AC cabnet, it is free in the front but stuck in the back.It appears to be hung up on the upper air duct that goes to the front of the dash. Is there a hidden clamp, screw or clip back there ? Just can't figure this one out. Disabled ASE MASTER mechanic but cant quit helping out.

Answer
I have run across this problem may times.

OK, Here is what they do at the factory.

1. They install the plastic cover over the heater core and put the bolts thru the firewall and install a NUT to hold it in place.

2. Further down the line they install the evaporator and the plastic housing of which the holes for this housing align OVER the bolts from tthe inside heater core that already has a NUT holding it on the firewall.

They then put on a SECOND NUT to hold the evap housing on the SAME BOLTS as the heater core housing.

Thus you have 2 nuts on each bolt.

SEQUENCE:

1. Mount inside housing with bolt thru firewall and install a NUT to hold it in place to the firewall.

2. Install the evap housing over the same bolts and install a NUT to hold it in place.

Thus 2 NUTS on the same bolt.

You have to remove the evap hosuing and you will see the OTHER NUT.

Makes you want to kill someone.
