Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: 95 Dodge Ram 1500 PU 5.2L V8, dodge ram 1500, refrigerant lines

Question
-------------------------Fuel pump replaced about a year ago. 16 months ago hit a deer and wiped out the right front fender. The little AC pipes got bent a just a hair but don't think the leak is there. I would say that your diagnosis is 100% on the money.  Thanks for your help. Not going to decide what to do until next Spring but am going to get some of thos window wind deflectors and see how they work.

Question -
The AC in my RAM went downhill over a week or so until it quit producing cold air at all. The clutch clicks on and off every 10 seconds or so but seems much louder than before. One of the 2 small pipes that run from the radiator to the cabin still gets cold when the AC is on but not ice cold. Could this be an electrical switch problem?
Answer -
What was the LAST repair on the vehicle ?. ANY repair of any nature ?. In most cases problems that arise days, weeks or even months later can usually be traced back to the previous repair.

NO, It is NOT in most cases electrical.

Your problem in 80% of all cases is a leak within the A/C system, Thus causing refrigerant (freon) to be expelled from the system.

Your most likely part failure is the EVAPORATOR and to replace it including parts & Labor your lookin at $500 to $800.

Sorry about the bad news per above,

Let me know.

Answer
I STRONGLY suggest that you FIX the A/C if it is a leaking refrigerant (freon) line.

If it IS the evaporator, I STRONGLY recommend that youdo the following:

1. Disconnect BOTH refrigerant lines that are attached to
the evaporator and find some type of threaded plugs or
even plastic plugs so you can SEAL these lines.

I know what your thinking, "WHY" ?.

This is "WHY". Refrigerant and refrigerant oil of which is in your A/C system as well as a MOISTURE ABSORBENT BAG which is inside your RECEIVER/DRIER (accumulator), Similar to the kind you get in, Lets say, An ink printer cartridge box, Which is there to absorb any moisture due to changes in normal atmospheric conditions.

The refrigerant and refrigerant oil and this MOISTURE ABSORBENT BAG within your RECEIVER/DRIER (accumulator) will absorb moisture like a sponge absorbs water if the A/C system is NOT sealed against normal changes in atmospheric conditions.

By the time you "GET AROUND" to fixing the A/C months later, You run a VERY HIGH risk of damaging the compressor, the lines, the condensor and the RECEIVER/DRIER (accumulator) due to the moisture that will be absorbed into every component thus causing RUST particles to develop and you will FOREVER have problems with your A/C cooling from this point on, Unless you replace EVERY A/C component.

When you disconnect the lines from the evaporator and seal the lines, Have the rest of the system EVACTUATED of atmospheric air and have it charged with freon as this will STOP any moisture absorbancy problems until you "GET AROUND" to fixing the A/C PROPERLY.

A few dollars spent sealing the lines, evacuating the atmospheric air and having the remaining components charged with refrigerant is MONEY WELL SPENT.

Obviously it is your choice to make, But I can pretty well guarantee that you will be asking me next spring 'WHY is my A/C NOT WORKING PROPERLY"?

I do not have a staff of people helping me answer your questions, I do it all by myself, except some typing help from my wife or son as the old fingers just don't flex as well as they used to. Therefore, Due to being retired and an OLD computer, That is so old it does not even have SPELL CHECKER on it and being on a dial-up connection,  Please excuse the TYPO'S.

I do my best to respond to questions within 4 to 5 hours, But  due to the volume of questions I receive on a daily basis I answer them ASAP. If you require a faster response you can e-mail me directly at the below e-mail address as I check it more frequently.:

meperganfortis@msn.com

When you are asked to RATE THIS EXPERT the site it only allows for about 10 (TEN) words. Therefore,  I never get to read your full response. You can e-mail me directly at the above said personal e-mail site. But make sure that you RATE ME before e-mailing me directly if you so desire to do so.

Sometimes when you have to replace a part, I will ask you  if I can have the old part, As my son and I rebuild them and sell them for extra income. I will pay the shipping costs as long as it does not exceed $10.00.

There are also times that you have some written information that you just don't understand or need help with it, You can e-mail it to me at the above siad e-mail address or you can fax it to me, But contact me FIRST at the e-mail address and I will give you my fax #. However, Again due to my OLD computer I have to log off from the dial up service in order to receive any faxes on my seperate fax machine.

I am alway in need of Car, Truck and SUV service manuals as well as MOTORS MANUALS and if you would like to donate any that you have, I will be more than happy to pay REASONABLE shipping to get them. I do not want any Chilton or Hayes manuals as I personally do not like them as the information contained in them is very mis-leading in my opinion.
