Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: air flow from vents, collegiate university, faulty component

Question
My son's 98 v6 camaro air from the air conditioner is only coming out at his feet, it is not coming out from the vents on the dash, like it does normally.  He has tried all the different possible combinations with no luck.  What could be wrong?  He is a college, so I can;t evenn take a look.....thanks for your help  The air at his feet is cold.

Answer
You stated: "He is a college, so I can;t evenn take a look ".

That is exactly my problem also. FIRST I need to know what kind of work of any type, Any kind, Any where of any nature was performed on the vehicle prior to this current problem.

Is it possible that he had a different radio installed in the vehicle and did NOT tell you about it ?. I to have a son at a collegiate University and FORGOT to tell me things. Must of just completly slipped his mind and if he thinks I am buying this I FORGOT story, He better think again as it did not work with my father either.

I really need to know the past repair history on the vehicle.

IF and I mean IF, There have been no repairs performed on the vehicle within the last year or sooner, The only probabilities that come to mind are:

1. An electrically operated CENTER AIR DOOR FLAP CONTROLLER, Each manufacturer calls it something different, But it is basically the same thing, Has failed of which was very common on the 89 Pick Up trucks as the electrical controller was mounted just above the gas pedal and if you had big feet you can accidently hit this controller with your foot and damage it or knock the wiring connector loose from it.

More than likely the above said CONTROLLER has failed internally of which was very common on the P/U trucks and would need to be replaced.

However, Since we both have the same problem, We do not have access to the vehicle, This is only a possibility.

He should have it diagnosed and tested before replacing parts in hopes of getting lucky, I am referring to the vehicle and NOT his girl friend, that this is actually the faulty component.

This particular component, If applicable to his vehicle costs about $80 to buy and it is usually a dealer ONLY item of which ELECTRICAL PARTS bought at a dealer are NOT RETURNABLE. So once he buys it, He's, Actually YOU are stuck with it.

Let me know.
