Auto Air Conditioning & Heater Repair: air conditioning, ford taurus gl, ford taurus

Question
the air works great as long as the car is sitting still. you drive it for 10 or 15 minutes the compressor quits running,if you shut it off for about 10 min. it will come back on, the low and high side pressures are ok.  any help would be appreciated.        91 ford taurus gl

Answer
There are several possibilities.

1. The expansion (orfice) tube may be partially restricted due to internal debris from the A/C components. Most prevalent at highway speeds. Of which builds up to much high side pressure thus causing the compressor to disengage until the pressure drops within normal limits.

2. There may be air in the A/C system of which causes the receiver/drier (accumulator) to freeze to the point that you can visually see heavy frost on the accumulator and hose assembly. Most prevalent at highway speeds.

3. The A/C condensor cooling fan is not operating and the high side pressure is getting to high at which time the compressor will disengage until the pressures drop to within normal operating pressures.

4. An intermittent fault within the pressure cycling cutoff switch.

5. To much refrigerant oil and not enough freon.

In cases such as this I have extra long A/C hoses so I can set the A/C guages (manifold set) on the front seat and monitor the pressures as I drive the vehicle on the highway in order to duplicate the problem.

Has there been any type of A/C work performed on this vehicle prior to this problem ?.

Has there been any repairs performed of any kind that may have involved discharging the A/C system ?.

Let me know.
