Auto body repair & detailing: Hanging rear bumper/ rusted wheel wells, rusted toyota, rust

Hi Gary, I have a 1989 Toyota Corolla that has rusted wheel wells. The bumper is hanging down on the driver's side because the bolt holding the bumper up has pulled loose from the rust-weakened fender. I thought of drilling a hole through in a different spot to hold it up again. Is that a good idea? I can't replace the rear fenders because they are part of the entire body of the car that includes the roof.
I may need to replace the front fenders just to stop deterioration but is there an easier way? There is a fist sized hole above the driver side wheel well.
This car has only 170.000 km. and runs beautifully. I hate to see it taken out by rust problems.

Hi Patricia,

The problem with drilling a new hole for mounting is the hole will rust out very quickly and you will have the same problem again soon. I would suggest finding someone who has done some rust repair before see if it's possible to add a patch panel in that area where the bumper can bolt up properly.
