Auto body repair & detailing: Paint Alternative, hot rod, flat

Question
I have a 1968 Dodge Dart drag car with a basic race car red or red paint job that shines nice but not bright.  Is there a way to use a single stage clear coat and a flattening agent to produce a simple flat red paint job since it's red already?  Am I asking or thinking this out correctly?

Answer
Hi Pete,

There is a company called SEM that makes a product called Hot Rod Clear (part # HRC40). It's sold in a kit with a quart of satin clear, hardener, and reducer. Hot Rod Clear basically dries to a satin or eggshell gloss level and matches nicely to most oem low gloss sheens on the market. To Apply: You basically wet sand your existing finish with 800-1000 grit, clean with a good quality grease and wax remover, then spray the Hot Rod Clear over the existing finish. Here's a link where you can get more information or purchase the product: http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd-sem-hrc40-hot-rod-clear-coat-kit.cfm
