Auto body repair & detailing: Hood Alignment, die grinder, older models

Question
We had to replace the hood on our 98 Lumina.  We can not get the hood to lay flush with the fenders.  It is raised on both sides towards the back, but then more flush towards the front of the hood.  The hinges sit in a groove in the fenders.  All suggestions needed.

Answer
Hi Jodi!....Just wondering if the replacement of the hood was due to it being pushed rearward from damage....If this is the case, the hinges should be replaced....This would result in this condition, and therefore replacing the hinges should solve your problem....Also, it can depend on if you purchased a factory hood, or an aftermarket one, even if the hood was not pushed rearward....One other possibility, is if the hinges have a spring on them....A weak spring, will also cause this condition, although on a model this new, it is unlikey this is the case, as most hinges that have springs are dedicated to much older models....Usually from the very early model vehicles, up until the late 70's and early 80's....Either way, to repair this problem, if replacing the hinges does not give you the desired results, you will need to elongate the most rearward hole vertically....Using a die grinder with a teardrop carbide bit will give you the fastest result....If one is not available, you can simply use a metal file....Once you have elongated the hole, simply drop the hinge at the back to the lowest point...This will drop the rear of the hood....This is a trial and error effort, so you might have to make a few attempts....Hope this helps you out....If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write me back....Thanks....Dave
