Auto body repair & detailing: 1972 chevelle frame, engine displacement, hi doug

Question
I have a crack in the frame right behind where the front lower control arm bolts on, curious if this can be fixed or if i should look for another frame?

Answer
Hi Doug!.....Any crack in a frame, becomes an automatic safety issue, as I am sure you are aware. Depending on where the crack is located, as in your case, behind where the lower control arm bolts/mounts onto, this in a critical area....If the crack was ahead of any suspension, steering or brake components, it is not as critical, but still a safety concern.....That being said, a crack can be repaired, if done properly...Complete penetration of the weld bead is crucial....Stress is the general cause of a crack. If the area has a crack now, unfortunately, there is a chance that it will appear again....One common cause of this type of problem is drivetrain weight....So if this is a concern for you, one option is to consider purchasing a frame for the same model vehicle that had the largest engine displacement installed at the factory. If you already have the heavier frame, it can be repaired, as long as it is done properly, as I mentioned earlier. Replace versus repair, all depends on personal preference and what you feel comfortable with...Hope this helps...Thanks....Dave
