Auto body repair & detailing: repaint 1989 Ford Bronco, 1989 ford bronco, body fillers

Question
I have several questions, first I have a large rusted area on the top of my truck can I repair it and use spray primer?  I hate cleaning spray guns and I would prefer to not use they until I am painting the whole truck.

I have a panel repair skin for the lower part of the tailgate, is there an adhesive cheaper than SEM 39337 that would be ok to attach it.

What would be good for the fiberglass cap, I heard that a good quality exterior flat black house paint would work.

Do I need to sand all the paint off?

I want to look ok, but I am 71 years old so if it lasts 5 years I will be happy.

Thank you,
Jim

Answer
Hi Jim!...In regards to priming the top of your truck after you have repaired it, the ultimate would be to use a 2 component primer/surfacer applied through a spray gun, but you can use a spray primer...A company called " Pro Form " makes one called " 1K High Build Primer/Filler "...Part number is PF 649....It can be used over bare metal, galvanized steel, aluminum, body fillers, and painted surfaces.....I have used this myself from time to time, and have had good results....As for the adhesive for the lower tailgate skin, none of these are very cheap...You will also need the proper dispensing gun as well...At my shop, we use a 3M product called " Structural Adhesive "...There also some available from a company called Norton also...You can check the differences in prices from company to company, but I think you will find they are close in cost....As for the fiberglass topper, I would stick to an automotive paint for best results...And for sanding, you do not need to sand all of the paint off...You just need to sand enough so that all of the shine is gone....Depending on the condition of the topper, ( chips, scratches, etc. ) , if you have this condition, you can start with 180, and graduate to 400 ...Remember to not jump any more than 100 grit from the last sanding...( If you start with 180, do not sand with anything more abrasive than 280 on the next sanding )....Hope this helps...Please write back if you have any more questions...Take care....Dave
