Auto body repair & detailing: steam cleaning interior - small SUV, professional detailer, mold and mildew

Question
I have a 1993 nissan pathfinder that really needs the interior cleaned bith carpet and seats...is auto detailing a specific job/skill with specific tools ....or for example can a person rent a home steam cleaner with a nozzle atachment to steam clean the carpets and seats of a car? if no why would this not work?

Answer
With a vehicle of this age I am tempted to tell you to take it to a "Professional" detailer. They are better equipped with both knowledge and supplies to do the proper job without ruining the interior.

If you want to take a shot at DIY detailing the carpet cleaner from a store is not the best. It puts more water into the material than it will extract. This becomes a problem if it doesn't dry properly. Mold and mildew will grow giving you a bigger problem.
