Auto body repair & detailing: 1988 Chevrolet Caprice LS viny roof removal, rust holes, chevy caprice

Question
I hope you can answer this for me! I bought a 1988 Chevy Caprice LS that has a vinyl roof on it. And where the vinyl roof meets the quarter panel, there is a three inch rust spot on each quarter panel. So I decided to take off the vinyl roof to see if there was any more rust damage and there was not any. Now on these cars that had the vinyl roof there is a fiberglass section attached the rear window opening which makes it extended out with a smaller rear window. Do you know if you can remove the fiberglass section and put in a regular full size rear window? And how is the best way to fix the three inch cirular rust holes on the quarter panel? Any info would be deeply appreciated! Thanks Walter

Answer
Walter.
All the yellow colored glue etc, will have to be sanded off the roof. Sand
down to the metal and apply metal -prep, "which is just a citric acid" this
stops and prevents rust from advancing.
The fiberglass insert in the rear window, is actually just covering a full
size piece of glass to make it look smaller/classy.The fiberglass window
frame is held in with screws or rivets. Drill them out or if screws unscrew
them, however you will need to fill that gap around the glass with a mouldings
this will be aluminum and in four to six pieces. You can more than likely find
one at a wrecking yard cheap.
As for the rusted areas, the professional way to do that is by welding new
metal in place of the old, however you can use a fiberglass resin to fill in
the holes after they are ground out and treated with an anti-rust agent.
(rust mort) available @ wal mart. You can also find a product called gorilla
hair/Tiger hair/or all metal ,a quart can should be sufficient to fill those
holes.
I hope this helps you,Best of luck.   Bill
