Auto body repair & detailing: residue, sticky situation, error type

Question
Was wondering if you could recommend a chemical or procedure to remove the white residue on trim, vinyl, tonneaus, etc. caused by some waxes and sealants.

Answer
This is a very sticky situation. There are many variables that have to be taken into account. How long the residue has been on the trim, how old the trim is, and what kind of vehicle it is, etc.

The safest way is to try a small area to see if you can get it off. I usually start with tar/bug remover. Wipe a small area and let it dry about 15 minutes. If the trim doesn't feel sticky or has turned white you can try another spot. If you feel confident that it will work then proceed with cleaning the entire trim piece.

There are other chemicals like goof off or paint thinners, but I would be very careful using these types of chemicals because they my damage the piece.

There are also vinyl paints that are available that might work.
All of these solutions are used as a trial and error type of fix to see what works.

Good luck,
Bob
