Auto body repair & detailing: painting topper, hippo liner, bedliner

Question
QUESTION: Hello I have a 91 full size gmc jimmy that i recently painted a metallic blue. I would like to paint the topper but dont want to paint it the same color as i think it would be "too" much blue color. I am thinking a black color not shiny but even thought something like what they use for bedliners a semi rough look. What do you suggest?

ANSWER: Hi Doug,

There are a several ways you can go for the black bed-liner look you're after. You can take it and have it Rhino lined. That would give you great durability but unless they have changed there product it will fade out to a dull gray look in about 6 months to a year. If you want to do it yourself I would consider using a product by Dominion called Hippo-Liner. I have used it before for different things and it worked very well. I tinted it the same color as my truck and sprayed in as a bedliner. The color has lasted about 2 years before it has started fading out. You can find it at the following link: http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd_color.cfm

If your looking for an inexpensive way of doing it yourself you can get you probably 4-5 cans of Dupli-Color Truck Bed liner and spraycan it on. If you sand it good Dupli-Color holds up pretty well. Not like Rhino or Hippo of course, but a fraction of the price. Here's a link:

Good Luck with it!

QUESTION: Hello Gary appreciate the feedback .I like to try the "hippo" product. now i need to decide on a color. Would you think it would be too much if i went with the same blue as the body or accent with a black? also do you need to clear coat? once i decide on the color i would like to spray on ..would you recommend the "schultz gun" R & E offers? thank you for your help !! Answer
Hi Doug,

It might be a bit too much of the same color blue. What you could do is either two tone it with a lighter or darker shade of blue if you're wanting to stay away from the black. It really falls back to personal preference. I personally wouldn't want black on the topper because of the amount of heat it adds to the vehicle but like I said that's me personally. I would lean toward two-tone blue myself.

Yes, that looks just like the gun I used. One word of caution though, after you finish using the gun don't soak it in solvent to clean it up. The seals inside swell up and it won't spray anymore. The second gun I bought, after I finished with the bedliner I sprayed clean lacquer thinner through it to clean it up somewhat. It won't get perfectly clean but it's good enough to keep it working. Good luck with it.
