Auto body repair & detailing: Cut and Weld my frame, lifetime workmanship warranty, gmc envoy

Question
I financed a 2006 GMC envoy,in immaculate condition. On the sixth day I had the vehicle a guy ran a stop sign. We hit him. It was a pretty hard hit, and it dented in my front bumper frame, which is attached to the car frame. The body shop say the only way to repair it is to remove a three foot section of my carframe and re-weld the new piece on. I asked the insurance company to total the car. They refused. Now I am stuck paying for the next 5 years for a car that is no good. How reliable are these repairs, and would you want to drive it? I do plan to sue his insurance for diminished value on my car, but am afraid to drive this car. Can you let me know your thoughts on this?

Answer
Melinda-

I will make this straight forward- (I'm so tired, but you need help!)

1) Trust your shop! Go to the dealer if at all possible.
2) have them educate you about the repairs, in person, at the car when it is torn down, before you authorize repairs.
3) Get a lifetime workmanship warranty from any reputable shop.
4) Trust your shop, again.
5) Ask the dealer for info on GM requirements for replacement of these components- if GM says it's safe it's safe.

Good Luck!
