Auto body repair & detailing: Rear Rubber bumper paint peeling away, auto body supply, rubber bumper

Question
Hello Mike/All,
I have a Lexus IS Sportscross wagon. I purchased it used about a year ago, and the rear bumper paint has been peeling. I'm wondering if I can prep and repaint the bumper myself. Is it difficult to do? What do I need to do if I decide to do it myself and save the money to bring it to a shop?

Answer
If the car is a really nice car, I would take it to a shop. Lexus used a variety of tri--coat pearls that are tough to match. If you really want to try it yourself and have all the equipment for the job, go to your auto body supply store and tell them what you are doing, the sales person will help you with the right materials. You are looking at four to five hundred dollars for a shop to paint the cover, you may get into it that much by buying the necessary stuff to do it yourself.
